This is a pretty consistent break on the north-east coast of Northland, and the easy conditions here mean it is suitable for everybody from beginners upwards.
As the name implies, the beach here is a large sandy area that follows the crescent shaped bay. It is a decent size and you will rarely find anybody else out here during the week, although weekends everybody comes out of the city and the place can get pretty crowded.
The swell will start working at about 1 m and hold up to a maximum of about 2 m, though it does so on all tide positions and on both rising and falling tides. It is best when the wind is coming from the west and the swell is rolling in from the east or the north-east. It is a beach break, both right and left, and the waves are pretty ordinary although they are still fun to ride. Length on a normal day isn't too bad and will be between 100 and 150 m, while a good day can be very good and you might see well over 400 m.
You can camp here either on the beach itself or as close as you feel comfortable, and there is plenty of parking available next to the beach. Remember that this is New Zealand not New York so don't expect showers, public toilets, or lifeguards patrolling the area.
Submerged rocks your biggest hazard here, although they are run a close second by some of the locals who, unusually for New Zealand, are pretty possessive and won't hesitate to drop in on visitors.
